This comprehensive mixed-methods systematic review reveals alarming levels of abuse and neglect faced by women during childbirth across various global health facilities. The study synthesizes data from 65 studies conducted in 34 countries, highlighting seven primary domains of mistreatment: physical abuse, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, stigma and discrimination, failure to meet professional standards of care, poor rapport between women and providers, and systemic health facility constraints. The findings underscore that mistreatment occurs not only at the interpersonal level between women and healthcare providers but also due to systemic failures within health facilities and broader health systems. This review calls for the adoption of an evidence-based typology to better describe and measure these mistreatment phenomena, aiming to inform future research, policy-making, and interventions to improve maternal care globally
