Pashtoon Zyaee is a Registered Nurse Midwife with 38 years in maternal and newborn health. Ms. Zyaee is the founder of the Afghan Midwives Association (AMA), which was established in 2005 to give voice to midwives and to strengthen midwifery programmes in the country. She also served at the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) as a Technical Midwife Advisor. She provided support in strengthening midwifery associations, education systems, and regulatory mechanisms in many countries. Before her work with AMA and ICM, Ms. Zyaee was the Director of the Ministry of Public Health, Ghazanfar Institute of Health Sciences and the GIHS System in Afghanistan. She has also held roles at Jhpiego and Management Sciences for Health (MSH), providing technical assistance on midwifery and nursing, overseeing strategic direction of nursing in Afghanistan, and supporting midwifery education. Ms. Zyaee has experience working in reproductive health training at the International Medical Corps as well as previous roles with Save the Children. Finally, she has served as the Deputy Chair and Chair of the Afghanistan National Midwifery Education Accreditation Board as well as a Member of the Institutional Review Board Ministry of Health MoPH.
