In 2015, with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), countries renewed commitments to reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths. At a global level, the Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP) and Strategies for Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality (EPMM) have reinforced the SDG maternal and newborn mortality reduction targets and detail additional targets related to coverage of essential services and milestones. ENAP and EPMM have recently combined efforts and are actively supporting countries with joint targets, milestones and tracking tools. The first combined ENAP/EPMM country progress report is expected to be launched at the upcoming IMNHC.

Measuring progress towards global MNH targets is only possible when countries are able to reliably count all maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths and track additional key indicators and targets. However, in many settings, measurement systems are not able to reliably capture/generate data needed to monitor global MNH targets.

This sub-section summarizes global maternal and newborn health targets including the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) MNH targets and the Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP) and Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality (EPMM) targets.

This sub-section focuses on global MNH monitoring frameworks, selected indicators guidance, data sources, and tools.
